Authors can publish Open Access without Article Processing Charges (APCs) in three Subscribe to Open (S2O) journals in 2026: European Addiction Research, Neurodegenerative Diseases, and Pediatric Neurosurgery.
Subscribe to Open is a publishing model that makes a journal volume Open Access if it reaches a certain number of subscriptions in a given year. Because subscribers under S2O help sustain the journals and cover publishing costs, authors can publish with no fees. Articles are published under a Creative Commons BY (CC BY) license, allowing anyone to read, share, and re-use the work. S2O makes publishing and accessing research uncomplicated and equitable for all, while Open Access increases the visibility and impact of researchers’ work.
Of the three S2O journals that are Open Access in 2026, European Addiction Research and Neurodegenerative Diseases are continuing as Open Access, and Pediatric Neurosurgery has again become open after two years of gated access. Karger is publishing its fourth Subscribe to Open journal, Developmental Neurosciences, on a subscription/hybrid basis in 2026 following three years of Open Access, as subscriptions did not meet its sustainability threshold.
The Subscribe to Open journals complement dozens of other fully Open Access journals in Karger’s portfolio. Authors may also choose to publish Open Access for a fee via Author’s Choice in any of Karger’s subscription journals.
